How to Fill Out an AIA G702 Application for Payment, Line by Line

The G702 is the one-page summary on top of a pay application. It rolls up the detail from the G703 continuation sheet into the single number you are asking to be paid. Once you understand the flow, every line follows from the one above it.

The lines, in order

1. Original contract sum: the contract amount before any change orders.
2. Net change by change orders: the total of all approved change orders to date, positive or negative.
3. Contract sum to date: line 1 plus line 2.
4. Total completed and stored to date: the grand total of column G from the G703, meaning work completed plus materials stored.
5. Retainage: the amount withheld, typically shown as a percentage of completed work and, separately, of stored material.
6. Total earned less retainage: line 4 minus line 5.
7. Less previous certificates for payment: the total of everything certified for payment on earlier applications.
8. Current payment due: line 6 minus line 7. This is what you are asking for this period.
9. Balance to finish, including retainage: line 3 minus line 6.

A quick example

• Contract sum to date: $250,000
• Total completed and stored to date: $100,000
• Retainage at 10%: $10,000
• Total earned less retainage: $90,000
• Less previous certificates: $60,000
• Current payment due: $30,000
• Balance to finish, including retainage: $160,000

Where people get it wrong

• Using the original contract sum after change orders have been approved.
• Entering last period’s payment in line 7 instead of the running total of all previous certificates.
• Applying the wrong retainage rate, or not reducing it after the contract allows a reduction.
• A line 4 that does not match the G703 total, usually because a line item was updated on one sheet and not the other.

Line 7 is the one that goes wrong most often from draw to draw, because it depends on accurately carrying forward every previous certificate. Keeping each draw saved per project makes that total automatic instead of something you rebuild by hand every month.
